Coping with Labor:  Comfort Measures

Are you an expectant mom, thinking of becoming pregnant or currently in the process of trying to conceive?  Whatever your individual situation, one thought may be swirling around in your mind:  "Can I cope with labor?"

It's a valid question.  And the answer is yes!  Yes, you can!

I wanted to list a few ideas here that you may find particularly helpful as your prepare for "Labor Day."

  • Have a good support system.  This may include your partner, a close friend, family member, doula, or a combination of several individuals.  Consistent and continuous support is essential to helping moms cope physically, emotionally and mentally with the rigors of labor.
  • Use hot/cold therapy such as ice cold wash cloths, ice packs, or a heating pad.  As you progress through the stages of labor, your desire for hot/cold may change so it's good to have access to both.
  • Bring things from home that you find comforting, such as your own pillow, blanket, pictures, battery operated candles and clothing.
  • Use essential oils and a diffuser for aromatherapy.  Great oils to use in labor are lavender, peppermint, wild orange, clary sage (ONLY safe for use when actually in labor or at your due date!), and any others that help you feel calm and/or energized.
  • Use a hand held massager or have your support people work on the parts of your body that are tensing up in labor (i.e. shoulders, neck, back, etc.). Fractionated coconut oil mixed with a drop of lavender makes a great, relaxing massage oil!  Counter pressure can be an amazing help too (see picture above).
  • Change positions often, empty your bladder at least once per hour, and stay mobile.  Try to change laboring positions every twenty minutes or so.  Utilize tools the hospital has as well, like a birth ball/peanut ball.
  • Utilize the shower and tub.  Hydrotherapy works wonders in labor to help moms relax!
  • Play music.  Create a playlist that is particularly comforting to you.

Now it's your turn:  If you have given birth before, what tips do you have?  What did you find particularly helpful in labor?  Comment below!

Happi loves serving families in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago as a labor doula and childbirth educator.  When she's not at a birth, she loves spending time at home with her loving husband and homeschooling her sons. She also finds great joy in serving the Lord at her church and teaching children about the love of Jesus!
